Marche van de begijnen2008-10-04, tags: march, duo
A march from Het Antwerps Beiaardboek of Johannes De Gruytters, 1746.
Beguines (female) were Roman Catholic lay religious communities active in the 13th and 14th century, living in a loose semi-monastic community but without formal vows. They lived each apart in a separate very tiny house. In Flanders, most cities had these community groups of small houses. Each is called 'Begijnhof' and you can still visit them. In Leuven, where I live, there are even two.
This tune is especially suited for two melody instruments. Play in a very dramatic way, as if you were very religious.
